Myth: "The VAT in my bank account belongs to me."
Short answer
False. Out of €1,190 transferred by your customer, €190 is VAT, and that goes straight to the tax office.
Key points
Your company owes the VAT it invoices. You only deduct input VAT and remit the rest. Anyone who spends this money and doesn't have it on payment day faces serious problems—extending all the way to personal liability for managing directors.
Rule of thumb: VAT is money parked on behalf of the tax office.
